About
Us

The Almont New Church Assembly and Retreat Center and the annual, week long Almont Summer School camp session it administers is one of three youth-focused residential camps recognized by the Swedenborgian Church of North America’s (SCNA) General Convention.

The Almont New Church Assembly was originally founded as the Almont Society of the New Church in 1851 by a group of Scottish immigrants who brought their faith tradition with them to their new rural community in Berlin Township, MI. Initially a two week long camping session for the children of the Assembly members and their families, the Almont Summer School was officially created in 1899 with the goals of providing fellowship and educating future generations in the faith. As the Almont Society of the New Church itself became less active over time, the facilities, which now included several housing buildings and a chapel which was built in 1870, were transferred to the Assembly itself. Starting in the early 1980s, the grounds began to be rented to organizations outside of the SCNA and the organization was renamed the Almont New Church Assembly and Retreat Center.

The SCNA exists to help people be open to the Lord’s presence and guidance by supporting ordained ministries and fostering personal connections with the Lord. We are an open-minded, forward-looking Christian church drawing its faith from the Bible as illuminated by the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg.

Operating as a 501c3 non-profit organization, the Almont Summer School provides a communal living experience with a significant focus on volunteer service, to experientially discover and share God’s love for each of us.

Our Church

Our Chapel was built around 1870 on the land donated by the Reid family. The exact date is unknown, but the earliest photo of the chapel is dated 1871. In 1974, the Chapel was moved from its original foundation, located immediately at the corner of Tubspring and Cameron Roads, to land purchased to extend the chapel yard. The Chapel now faces the camp and Cameron Road, and is parallel to Tubspring. The old foundation is now a large campfire area with benches and a fire pit circled by stones.
